Why I chose Wawa: Wawa’s College Graduate Leadership Program provided me with the best opportunity to have a work - life balance. The position offers great benefits both monetary and non-monetary. I knew that working in an office was not for me. Wawa provided an opportunity to work outside of an office, in a fun and exciting environment. It also gave the chance to work for a local company where I would not have to worry about relocation. Given the ability to stay close to home, while working a flexible schedule, with great pay and benefits, made my choice to work for Wawa an easy one, and I have loved every minute of it. My Training: Through the position you gain more exposure to all aspects of business than you can imagine. You truly work toward running your own multimillion dollar business. This position is not just a job that you come into and go through the motions; you learn, grow and enhance all of your skills. It allowed me to utilize all of the skills that I developed through my previous internships. It also enhanced all of the training I received in the classroom. Almost every business course that I took at Saint Joseph’s University, both in my undergraduate and graduate programs, are put into practice each and every day. Everyday provides a new and exciting experience, while continuing to challenge you as team and an individual. The most important part of the job is the people. The customers and the associates are what make Wawa so unique. Learning how to manage and train associates and growing the business through the customers proves to be an ongoing challenge that I love facing every day. Wawa provides you with all of the tools and training necessary to perform job function and it is what you do with these tools that set you apart. Career Plans: I recently complete Wawa’s College Graduate Leadership Program and have been promoted to a General Manager in Training. I loved the whole Internship experience. What a great company! I was impressed with the fact that I was able to transfer to another store in another state without losing any ground. I was placed with great managers and great people who taught me an awful lot. My leadership skills greatly improved. In a two year Community College, they teach leadership but not to the extent as in a four year college. So, the skills the Manager taught me were quite helpful. The overall educational value was very valuable. I would absolutely recommend this internship to my friends and have done so already.

The people that work for Wawa are wonderful. They understood that I was there to learn and didn’t get upset when I made mistakes. It was a little overwhelming at first. But everyone I worked with was very encouraging and kept telling me to hold on and not give up. They kept saying the more I do and the more I learn, the easier it will get. There were a lot of things that I was taught in school that I was able to apply to my internship experience. There were a lot of times when the light bulb went on and I realized what my professor’s were trying to teach.

I really enjoyed observing all the “behind the scenes” ins and outs of how a business operates during my internship at Wawa. I certainly learned how much work is involved in the minute to minute flow of companies’ operations. I definitely think I learned a great deal about dealing with people in general. I also developed some more time management skills. For example, on any given day at the cashier, I had to make sure to wait on customers as efficiently as possible and when there were no lines, make sure cigarettes were filled, counter was cleaned, hot food that expired was pulled off the shelf, etc. This certainly taught me that in any business one has to truly be “on the ball” at all times in order to be as productive as possible.

I truly enjoyed interning at Wawa, and feel that my experiences will benefit me in the future. Though Wawa is a large corporation, it has many qualities that make it like a private one. Wawa takes care of its customers, and values all of their opinions and comments. With a customer friendly staff, Wawa ensures that their customers will always have a pleasant experience when they step foot into any Wawa. At first, I did not really understand what made our particular Wawa busy 24/7. However, quickly I found out that for many people, Wawa has become a daily routine in their lives. Whether it be the usual 24 ounce coffee and a donut, or a pack of Newports with a News Journal, I found myself greeting the same people each day, and forming a relationship with them. There are several things I can go on about of what I learned at Wawa, whether it be checking in a vendor, or running a cycle count on gift cards, but I believe that what I will bring out of this internship the most is how valuable it is to cherish a customer, because they are truly the ones who will determine the success of a business.

I would just like to say that participating in the Wawa internship program has allowed me to grow as an individual and continue to develop my skills as a leader in a work environment. The program gives an undergraduate business student a great opportunity to gain valuable management experience at an accelerated pace. During this internship, I really felt like I was running a business and was given the responsibility to do so frequently. I would recommend this program for any business student that is looking to enhance their management experience, leadership, and overall people skills. As an intern you get an opportunity to have a organized development program in management, and work with an lucrative company that is on the rise. This program prepares you to be an effective leader and will stay with you throughout your entire career. Wawa as a company is a great place to work because the people you work for really care about you and the development of your career.
